Your chimney withstands various weather elements year-round. Rainwater, melting ice and snow, and moisture can be particularly damaging as water can seep in between the bricks. Over time, spalling can occur and damage the surfaces of the brick or stone. You’ll see it peeling, flaking or popping. In some cases, the brick can also fall apart.
Damaged brickwork usually requires a rebuild. Here are the three different types of chimney rebuilds.
Types of Chimney Rebuilds
Professional sweeps may recommend any of these chimney rebuilds depending on the severity of damage.
- Partial rebuild – This is ideal for small chimneys where scaffolding isn’t needed. It’s also the type of rebuild done if there is only one part of the chimney that needs to be replaced, particularly the top or crown.
- Roofline and up rebuild – Typically, a new chimney is built from the roof flashing upwards. A new chimney crown is also added. Scaffolding is also used.
- Complete rebuild – This rebuild is performed if the entire structure of the chimney has been severely damaged – for instance, the chimney is leaning or experiencing severe spalling or mortar deterioration.
Importance of Inspection and Repairs
While chimney rebuilds are useful in fixing your chimney, it’s still best to prevent the need for such repairs. You can avoid the hassle and danger of a damaged chimney by hiring a chimney sweep to carry out inspection once a year. Apart from ensuring the safety of your chimney, regular chimney inspections can also help prevent fires.
Typically, a chimney inspection checks for cracks, creosote buildup, damaged crown, water damage, spalling issues, deteriorating flashing, cracked or damaged flue tiles, obstructions or blockages, and pests in the chimney.
