Preparing Your Gas Fireplace for Winter

With winter just right around the corner, you can expect to have warm nights in front of your gas fireplace. But if you haven’t even cleaned your fireplace for the upcoming season, you’ll likely end up with smoke and soot everywhere. This is why it’s important to prepare your fireplace properly.

Here are few tips on preparing your gas fireplace for the winter season:

Make Sure to Cover Up

Spread a tarp, an old sheet or something similar on the floor around the base of your fireplace. You may also want to cover your furniture because the process can get messy. Covering everything up first will save you the time and effort on having to clean ash from your carpets and furniture afterwards. We also suggest wearing old clothes and rubber gloves before you start the process.

Remove the Debris

Even if you have a gas fireplace, there will still likely be minor debris that was accumulated whenever it was being used over time. As a trusted chimney masonry repair specialist, we suggest that you take care of the debris found in your fireplace, but if you’ve made a fire recently, wait at least a day or two so that everything has cooled completely before cleaning it.

Vacuum and Clean

After removing most of the ashes and dust, you’ll need to do a proper vacuuming. Using a handheld vacuum cleaner is perfect for getting into all those nooks and crannies, but you may also need to remove the protective sheeting from the floor and furniture, and vacuum those surfaces, just in case.

To clean the bricks, you’ll first need to remove the grate or andirons. Then, you’ll have to thoroughly spray down the area with water until it’s wet. This is to keep your cleaning products from soaking into the bricks too fast and causing damage. If you find it a bit tiring to clean the smoke off your bricks, you can always call our services to get the job done.
