Don’t throw away the wood ash from your fireplace just yet. There are several ways you can repurpose it.
Seasoned gardeners use ash to increase the nutrient levels in the soil. Fire converts the nitrogen and sulfur in wood, but essential soil nutrients like calcium, potassium and magnesium remain. Within a few days of adding ash to compost, you’ll notice the number of worms – and by extension, the nutrient levels – has increased.
A seasoned gardener will also know that certain shrubs and trees like hawthorne, oak and elm thrive better in alkaline soil. However, you need to be careful with the amount you sprinkle because even a pinch can significantly raise the soil’s potential hydrogen (pH) level. We recommend using a soil testing kit to find out whether your garden soil is acidic or alkaline.
Since ash can alter the soil pH level, it can also be used as a cheap weed killer. As mentioned earlier, however, you should do this with caution. Sprinkling too much ash can turn your garden barren.
Apart from weeds, ash can also be used to get rid of vermin. Mice and other pests love to make their nests in your siding. If there are any holes in your siding, fill them wood ash. You’ll have to do this every day, but eventually, the ash will drive the mice away.
Since you’ll use the fireplace more frequently in winter, you usually end up with a lot of ash. Instead of using salt, sprinkle some ash on frozen pavements to thaw it.
Keep in mind that despite all its uses, ash can still trigger allergies. That’s why it would be a good idea to have an experienced chimney sweep clean your chimneys and fireplace before the start of fall and winter.
